For women, the idea of riding a motorcycle seemed a million miles away, they all thought it was a boys toy. Well I was different, I was independent and liked to be different. I worked for the company skip hire uk and was the only woman to do so. All the lads found it hilarious at first but I soon showed them a women could do just as much as a man. My motto was, for women out there who want to but think they can't, you can!

When I first turned up on my motorcycle for work with my helmet on, they thought I was just another worker, until I pulled of my helmet and my long auburn hair flowed down my back. I was under instruction from my boss not to do any heavy lifting and to let the boys move the skips, well I'm sorry but what was the point of employing me if I couldn't do the full job. I just got stuck in.

The boys soon got used to me being part of the team and let me get on with my job. We even had a motorcycle appreciation group and my bike was definitely the best, even if I do say so!

When my team leader left for a new job there was talk of who was to replace him, nobody ever suggested me as I was a woman. But, they all got a shock when we got the instruction that I had been promoted. Some of them found it really hard to work under me and we seemed to have some tension in the air.

I called a meeting and told it like it was. If they couldn't take instruction from a woman, then they needed to rethink what they wanted to do as there were plenty of people who would be grateful of the job. they soon had a change of heart when they realised I was serious.

So, for women everywhere, this is proof that you can do exactly what you want in life and not worry about what others think. They soon come round to your way of thinking when they realise you are serious.
