On any typical day you can pick up a newspaper and find adverts in the classified section for driving instructor courses. As I have only ever driven, well ridden, a moped I'd never really considered these adverts seriously.
A friend of mine owns a classic car and he is thinking of taking one of these courses however. His argument is that apart from the fact that working as a driving instructor can provide a useful extra income, the qualification has additional benefits. The insurance on a classic car like my friend's is very high, however by taking a driving instructor course he can show the insurance company he has an advanced driving qualification and this will lower his premium somewhat. Having a good insurance policy on a classic car like his is essential, as if he should have a crash the repairs would be very costly. I know my friend had a minor crash a few months ago, and spent several hundred pounds just replacing the wing mirror! In fact his wing mirror probably cost more than my moped is worth!
I might do a driving instructor course myself, then I can get rid of my moped and get a car, with the benefit that the car will pay for itself if I can get a few clients to take driving lessons with me every week. My family would very much like me to get a car instead of my moped as they worry that I might get hurt if I crash. The moped offers me very little protection, and I agree that a car would be far safer.
I would probably get a small car like a Nissan Micra or similar. These cars are very fuel efficient and would be cheap for me to run. Small cars are easy to drive as well, and a Micra, or even something like an Opel Corsa, would be ideal to teach people to drive in.
If i do decide to get rid of my moped, I'll probably do it soon, before the weather gets cold. The other advantage of a car is that it will keep me warm and dry!
