I had heard bad things about female driving instructors and so when I

I had heard bad things about female driving instructors and so when I booked a course of driving lessons with a local driving school I was not too happy when on my first lesson a female driving instructor turned up outside my house. Her name was Sam and she did a lot to dispel all the myths I had heard about female driving instructors.

She had a very calming influence on me, as I was very nervous and was literally shaking the first time I attempted to drive. She also had a lot of patience as I was useless when I first started. I kept stalling the car and forgetting to check my mirrors. She did not get angry but just kept on encouraging me and not to worry to much about making mistakes as everyone does when they learn to drive.

My friends made fun out of me at the time for having a female driving instructor, but I insisted that female driving instructors can be just as good as their male counterparts. I told Sam and she just laughed about it and said she was used to it and it never bothered her or any other female driving instructors that she knew.

After a month or so of taking lessons I sat my theory test, which turned out to be a lot harder than I expected. I admit I got quite cocky about it and barely squeezed through which was a bit of a wake up call for me. Sam told me she had met many young drivers like me that thought that the theory test would be easy to pass, but the main thing was that I had passed.

I kept on taking lessons with Sam and was improving steadily until one day she suggested that I should think about taking my practical test, as she thought I was ready for it. I was not convinced but Sam managed to talk me around and assured me I was ready and so I applied to take the test.

A couple of weeks later I was all set to sit my practical test. Sam took me out for a two hour lesson before my test, just to iron out any last minute problems I had. So I began my test and everything was going smoothly until suddenly a van came flying out of a side street and cut me up. I slammed on the brakes and somehow managed to avoid it. The examiner actually said he thought it was the best emergency stop he had ever seen by a rookie driver doing their test! Not long after I finished my test and the examiner was pleased to inform me that I had passed with flying colours. To say I was delighted was the understatement of the century!
